The FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse: what drivers need to know

Updated October 2026

The Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is an FMCSA database of CDL drivers' drug and alcohol program violations.

Why it matters for your job search

Employers must check the Clearinghouse before hiring a CDL driver and at least once a year after. For the full pre-employment check, you'll need to register in the Clearinghouse and give consent electronically.

What to do

Register for a Clearinghouse account on the FMCSA website before you start applying, so you can respond quickly to consent requests. If you have a violation, the return-to-duty process must be completed before you can drive again.
