How to get your first CDL job with no experience
Updated October 2026
Getting the first job is the hardest part. Many employers want experience, but plenty hire new drivers too.
Where new drivers get hired
Many large carriers hire recent CDL graduates, often into OTR or regional fleets with a training period alongside an experienced driver. Some local and regional companies hire new drivers for specific routes. Company-sponsored training programs often come with a job offer.
How to stand out
Keep a clean driving record and a clean drug and alcohol history. Pass your permit and skills tests on the first try if you can. Be flexible about your first job; one solid year of experience opens many more doors.
