Questions to ask a trucking recruiter before you accept

Updated October 2026

Recruiters are selling the job. These questions get you the full picture.

Pay

How is pay calculated, and how are miles counted? What do drivers in this fleet actually average per week? Is there detention, layover, stop and breakdown pay? When does pay start, and how often are you paid?

Home time and schedule

How often will I be home, and how long? How are loads assigned? What happens if I need time off?

Equipment and benefits

What trucks will I drive, and are they inward-facing camera equipped? What does health insurance cost each week? Is there a sign-on bonus, and how is it paid out?

Ask to talk to a driver

A good company will connect you with a current driver in the same fleet.
